Poetry Walks promote literacy, learning, and encourage a deeper appreciation of the environment, especially when poems are site-specific and change monthly over a five-month summer season. Not only is this program easy to design, it can be inexpensively implemented by libraries. Penny Cunningham of Burnham Memorial Library in Colchester, Vermont and Lisa Liotta of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation are now planning their fourth annual poetry walk. In this program, Penny and Lisa will explain their process of creative collaboration and show you how to select a walking trail; find and choose monthly poetry collections; display the poems; prepare and present a brochure; invite audience participation, engagement and reflection; and market for success.
