Oral histories provide unique opportunities to understand historical events and life in the past. Often libraries lack the funding and support to develop, record, and promote an oral history of their own...but collaboration can make it possible! We want to encourage libraries to collaborate with their community to start their own oral history projects! Since December 2015, the Newton Free Library has worked with several city departments to develop Newton Talks, an oral history project for the city of Newton - all without a budget! The project has forged community partnerships and successfully applied for grant funding. Team members will discuss the day-to-day of the project, inter-department collaborations, and helpful free tools. We will also present the challenges we've faced and the lessons we've learned so far!
